Models ranked by Personalization.
Which AI model should you choose for cold email?
Personalization and voice
Start here when an email needs to use the research well and sound like one person wrote it.
Fable 5.1 leads Personalization (82.8/100) and Voice (68.8/100) in this benchmark.
Concision and AI tells
Use these criteria when you want an email that says only what it needs to, without familiar signs of AI-written text.
GPT-6 Sol leads Concision (81.7/100) and AI tells (56.5/100) in this benchmark.
Quality for the cost
Compare price with the writing criterion you care about. Paying more does not mean leading on every score.
Opus 5.5 scores 60.7/100 on Voice at $0.0688 per email. Fable 5.1 scores 68.8/100 at $0.1504. The lowest reported token cost is $0.0107, from Gemini 3.8 Flash.

How Twain Bench works
Twain Bench tests how AI models turn prospect research into a cold sales email. Every model writes from the same research, and every email is evaluated against the same rubric.
Read Methodology- Same brief, same conditions
- 1,000 cold sales emails per model, across 100 companies in 10 industries. Every model receives the same research and prompt, with a fixed benchmark date and medium reasoning effort. Models cannot browse the web, and we add no model-specific writing instructions.
- Independent scores
- 3 AI judges from different providers read every email. Each of the eight criteria is scored independently from 0 to 100. We do not weight or combine these scores into an overall ranking.
- What these results measure
- This benchmark measures model writing under one shared prompt. It does not measure observed reply rates or rank ready-to-use products. The data export is dated October 16, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn’t there an overall winner?
Twain Bench measures eight different qualities of a cold email. Personalization, voice, factual support, and concision do different jobs, and their importance depends on your outreach.
We report each score separately. Combining them would require us to choose weights for your team. Use the criteria that matter to you to shortlist models, then read what they write for your own prospects.
Does the Reply score predict real reply rates?
No. The Reply score averages AI judges’ assessments of whether the recipient would answer. Each judge plays the recipient and reads the email with only what the recipient knows about themselves.
No real replies stand behind the score. A score of 31 out of 100 does not predict a 31% reply rate.
What does a high Hallucination score mean?
A higher Hallucination score means more of the email’s claims are supported by the research brief. Judges check specific claims about the sender and recipient for invented or misattributed facts. Assumed premises are tracked separately and do not lower this score.
The score is not the percentage of emails with no unsupported claims. An email can contain many supported facts and one unsupported claim, so a high average does not mean every email is fully supported.
What does the cost per email include?
The cost per email is the list price of the tokens each model used to generate its emails, without provider caching discounts. Caching savings depend on the provider and the order of calls, so we exclude them from the comparison.
These are benchmark generation costs, rather than the price of sending an email through Twain.
Will I get the same results with my own prompts?
The benchmark measures how models write under one shared prompt. Your writing instructions, research, recipients, and reasoning settings can change the emails and the ranking.
Use Twain Bench to choose models worth testing. Then compare emails written from your own leads and company research before putting them into an outreach workflow.
Can I inspect the dataset and generated emails?
The company and prospect research, and the generated benchmark emails, remain private. We publish aggregate results and explain the prompt, scoring rubric, and limitations in the research article.
The example emails in the article are illustrative. They are not emails taken from the benchmark dataset.
Who scores the emails?
Three AI judges from three providers score every email using the same eight criteria. Each model’s scores are averaged across its 1,000 emails and all three judges.
The judges broadly agree on the order of the models, though they differ in strictness. Their agreement is lower on Flow and Reply, where models also score close together. AI judges are not human readers, so test emails for your own prospects before choosing a model.
